Reading

In 3rd grade, students will transition from using pictures in books to help with words, to read words and make mental pictures. Encourage your student to read often and afterwards talk about what they've read.

Some great questions you can ask with any story are:
  • Why do you think the character did that?
  • What words would you use to describe the character?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • Have students make connections to the story. Did they do something similar to a character in the book, did they read something similar in another book, etc?
  • Can you make up a different ending to the story?
  • What if the story was told from another character's point of view?
  • What was a new fact you learned?
  • What is the main idea?
