This week we will be learning about our last person highlighted in a S.T.E.A.M. career: Shigeru Miyamoto. He is a video game designer. You may have even played one of his games before!

Mary was the first paleontologist (a person who studies fossils.) She was discovering dinosaur fossils before the word "dinosaur" was even invented!

From working as a mechanical and nuclear engineer at NASA to having over 100 patents (a document that gives the inventor of something the right to be the only one to make or sell the invention for a certain number of years), Lonnie Johnson is leaving his mark in the S.T.E.A.M. career world!

Each week in March, a person who is recognized in a S.T.E.A.M. career will be highlighted in preparation for Career Day on March 26th. In honor of March reading month, a read aloud will also be included.

Painters, musicians, writers and others have long been inspired by space. This is an example of "The Arts" part of S.T.E.A.M.! There are countless plays, books, songs and other creative works all about space. These works of art have helped inspire many NASA scientists and engineers to pursue their careers in space exploration.

This week, you will do some research about Mars to create a poem! Your poem can be an acrostic, Haiku, or your choice.

Have you heard about the rover that is going to land on Mars this week? The name of the Mars rover is Perseverance and it launched last year (2020) in July. The rover is a robot that traveled 300 million miles to Mars to look for signs of past life!

Perseverance is scheduled to land on Mars, Thursday, February 18th. In honor of this, we will be exploring how scientists use elements of art to study images of planets for this week's activity.

Last week, you learned about autonomous cars and how they can drive themselves using laser lights that send 3-D images back to the car.

We just celebrated New Year's Day on January 1st, but did you know their is also a celebration called the Chinese New Year? It is one of the most important holidays in China! Each year is represented by a different Chinese zodiac animal. This year is the year of the Ox.

In this activity, you will need to create a snowflake using pattern blocks that has symmetry and follows additional criteria (the criteria is in the Google Slide.)
